In the following post, Jack Elway discusses reasons why fashion trends are essential to your career and your brand, and why it’s important to cultivate a sense of style.
Okay… some trends are undoubtedly stupid.
But here’s the thing: pretty much everything that gets labeled a “trend” disappears almost immediately, and for good reason. The trends that stick aren’t known as “trends”; they become “style.”
So, how do you tell the difference between following a trend and having style? Style is a part of you – your lifestyle, personality, and philosophy. When you try to disguise the real you, you’re just succumbing to a trend.
Nevertheless, if you’re going to project an aura of confidence and success, you have to pay attention to contemporary fashion. Here’s why.
You aren’t some relic of a bygone era.
Staying current tells the world that you have a personal investment in what’s going on right now. You are a part of the modern culture, and aren’t going to be left behind.
When you apply for a job, you have to illustrate your knowledge of what is going on right now. Innovation is the catchword of the day, and your ability to embrace new things and drive the organization forward is essential. How successful you are in convincing others of this ability depends upon how you present yourself.
You want people to know who you think you are.
Your wardrobe is a powerful tool; it helps you to define and expand upon your personal brand, and can influence both your own mentality and the opinion of the people you meet. Not every day should be casual Friday.
Your sense of fashion is your introduction to the world. When you’re putting your wardrobe together, what do you want it to say?
No matter what your personality is or what your goals are, you can communicate them through your attire.
You are worth the effort.
You can’t have style without being self-assured. When you’re well put-together, you present the image of a confident and efficient person. You might have so much confidence that you are perfectly comfortable wearing anything in any situation. Nevertheless, for better or worse, most of us have to navigate a judgmental world, and if we can’t inspire confidence in our abilities, we will only succeed in making life difficult for ourselves.
How to cultivate your personal style.
Consider the following when designing your overall look:
- Your personal style begins with your disposition. Are you a generally relaxed sort of person, or is your routine highly structured? Are you ambitious? Adventurous? Do you forge your own path? Are you the life of the party, or do you prefer solitude?
- Think about your greatest passions. Are you highly artistic? Very practical? Are you interested in intellectual pursuits, or do you get bored sitting still?
- What colors simultaneously flatter you and make you happy?
Once you’ve considered all of the above factors, you’ll be able to build your wardrobe into a coherent representation of your brand and yourself.
Following contemporary style and applying it to your look won’t turn you into a fashion zombie; it will only give you a personal and professional advantage.
